Fertilizer factory worth $1.5b to be developed in Papua

Trade Minister Airlangga Hartarto has lauded a plan by state-owned fertilizer company PT Pupuk Indonesia and Germany based Ferrostaal to develop a fertilizer factory in Bintuni Bay, West Papua. The two companies have agreed to carry out a feasibility study for the US$1.5 billion project. "The two parties have a commitment to provide the government with comprehensive data related to the petrochemical factory," the minister said as reported by kontan.com on Monday (23/1).

The increase in the global commodity prices will help galvanize Indonesia's economic growth, which is expected to reach 5.3 percent in 2017, an economist said."Prices will not only boost exports but also help improve the purchasing power of the people and the government's expenditure," Standard Chartered economists Aldian Taloputra said here on Monday (23/1). The increase in the prices of commodities such as oil, gas, palm oil and coal in 2017 will contribute to exports, which in the past several years experienced negative growth, he added. The commodity prices also have impact on raising the purchasing power of the people and driving the growth in the household consumption sector, particularly in natural resource producing regions.
