Interest rates differ in banks

Bank interest rates are in a state of disparity, some suddenly dropped but some silently rose to 8.2 percent/year.
After the Tet holiday, interest rates became "hot" again. Many banks race to list deposit rates at peak or close to peak levels. Vietnam Prosperity Joint Stock Commercial Bank (VPBank), National Citizen Bank (NCB) and Construction Bank (CB) are leading the market with a ceiling rate of 8 percent/year.

Worthy pursuit

With the likely demise of the TPP, following the withdrawal of the US from the trade pact, the big question is how this will impact Vietnam and what it means for the bilateral Vietnam – US relationship. Whether or not Vietnam will lose its attraction in terms of FDI is not in my opinion directly related to the TPP, though we did see some US investment on the back of the expected deal, but is more to do with how foreign investors perceive the investment environment in Vietnam and the ease of doing business...

Vietjet to sell 22mn shares to Sunny Huong Duong

Sale to bring in $83.1 million and fund aircraft purchase and leases and technology investments. Low-cost carrier Vietjet Air has announced it will sell 22,388,06 shares, or 7.46 per cent, to the Huong Duong Sunny Investment Co. at a price of VND84,600 ($3.76) per share.

Vinacomin's bauxite-alumina project records $162 million loss

"After three years (from October 2013 when it was launched to September 30, 2016), the bauxite-alumina complex in Lam Dong has accumulated a loss of VND3.696 trillion ($161.8 million). In particular, the operating loss was VND2.520 trillion ($110.3 million), and loss from foreign exchange fluctuation was VND1.176 trillion ($51.5 million)," said the report.

Technology Transfer Law on debate

The committee agreed that technology assessment is a complicated process, especially the assessment of technology transferred from overseas. The assessment time of imported technology must be in accordance with the Investment Law and requires longer time. Vietnam's trade turnover reaches $16.6b

According to the General Statistics Office, the country's total import-export turnover in the first two months of 2017 reached $27.2 billion, of which export turnover was $13 billion, increasing 15.4 per cent from the same period last year, while import turnover was $14.2 billion, registering a year-on-year rise of 19.6 per cent.

Explaining the New Regulations of Foreign Contractor Withholding Tax on Trade Marks in Vietnam

He clarifies that the correct translation of the article 5.21 of the Vietnamese Law on Value Added Tax, which is in the heart of the confusion, should be as follows: "Technology transfer under the Law on Technology Transfer; assignment of intellectual property rights under the Law on Intellectual Property; computer software are among the non-taxable objects" as opposed to the popular English translation of "Technology transfer under the Law on Technology Transfer; transfer of intellectual property rights under the Law on Intellectual Property; computer software shall be among the non-taxable subjects".

Annual Report on Vietnam's Economy (2016)
