Tsawwassen artist transforms car into 'real showstopper'

From Delta Optimist:

Tsawwassen artist Jeroen Vermeulen has picked an interesting way to get his work out there.

He's had one of his large abstract paintings professionally wrapped around his 2008 S450 Mercedes.

"I think, for me, it was a way to bring my art to the public," he told the Optimist.

People have been pointing at his car and coming up to talk to him about it, he said.

"It's a real showstopper."

Vermeulen, 70, described the art now adorning his car as a modern abstract piece and a Jackson Pollock-like painting.

The Rotary Club of Tsawwassen member, who's also a national anthem singer for various Vancouver sports teams, said he's been painting for 45 years and that his forte is large abstract paintings.

He had fashion photographer Lilian Tan take images of the painting, which measures eight feet by six feet, and then took the project to a custom vehicle wrap business in Tilbury.

Prima Graphics managing partner Tyson Longworth said the design stage took about a week and then it was a couple days for the actual installation.

"It was a smooth process and I think we're all pretty happy with the finished product," he said.

Vermeulen's artwork can be viewed at http://jeroen.ca.

"Our City Ride" — big family cycling event on August 19th

From the consulate:

On August 19th, the consulate of the Netherlands will be involved in organizing a family friendly bike ride in Vancouver, just like we did in 2016.

This year our partners from M1 Sports are the main organizer, they have received approval and funding from the city of Vancouver and will host the ride called "Our City Ride" on August 19th.

KLM is one of the main sponsors for the event, they are also promoting the bike ride at the moment.

This year it will be a large ride with more than 5,000 participants, the route will be safe and other traffic will be blocked during the ride. General admission for adults will be $ 20, riders under 18 are free.

At the consulate of the Netherlands we are fully supporting this bike ride.

The organizers have given us 400 free tickets for our Dutch contacts who register through the consulate. They have set up a system, whereby we will get an individual access code for each participant. After confirmation through the consulate, we will send you a personalized code: you have to register through the "Our City Ride" website – with this code adults can join free of charge.

The consulate will also print special orange shirts for the first 250 Dutch participants to register.

If you are interested to participate, confirm by email to van-ez@minbuza. nl. Add the full names of the participants: per person we will send 1 individual access code. After this you will have to register at: https://ccnbikes.com/#!/events/our-cityride

With kind regards,

Wetenswaardigheden

by Tineke Schrander
