Sinterklaas Party was organized by ....

....  our Dutch community!

It was fantastic to see such a large crowd celebrating Sint's arrival and enjoying a great Dutch tradition.

Fun for the young with all the games and excitement of seeing Sinterklaas and his Pieten. Fun for the old to relive memories and see so many happy faces.

We would like to thank all the volunteers that made the 2017 Sinterklaas Kids Party possible: Leann Mullender, Jan Roelof Falkena, Else Bakker, Wilbert de Graaf, Tjeerd Veninga, Karen Drapers, Hans Brinkhoff, Mireille Koenders, Corinda Kromhout, Wendy Talens, Anouk Drapers, Inez Vreeken, Laurens Adriaanse, Veronique Wijffels, Merel Bockholts, Oscar Koenders, Aaron Koenders, Jasmine Koster, Sanne Vermeer, Maarten Vermeer, Ester Koster, Stef Veninga, Merel Adriaanse, Els Dupont, Alida Estudillo and her mom, Sem Bakker, Wencke Bakker, Annemarie Vosselman,  Anne-Roos Vosselman, Thijs Vosselman and Lisette Nanning. And of course a special thanks for Hilcrest Bakery and A Touch of Dutch for selling all those delicious Dutch goodies!

This event has a long history in Seattle and was initially organized by the Holland America Club for many years. Due to lack of volunteers the HAC, as we know it, was terminated. Unfortunately that means that they are not the ones organizing this and other Dutch events.

This being said, please realize how special it is that Leann Mullender stepped up for the third time in a row to organize today's Sinterklaas Kids party. Many of the people making this day happen are helping out for many years already and it was great to see that new volunteers stepping up to help at the event today.

Anybody who wants to organize an event for the Dutch Community can ask the support of HAC with non-profit status and in some cases pre-financing the event, but if no one stands up, there are no events.

As one of those people taking care of this day for the past six years, I want to reach out to you all who enjoy this party and want it to take place again next year. Please don't count on the same people to 'automatically' take care of it again and please do consider to step up (maybe with a group of people together) to take it over for next year. All the decorations, games, costumes are from 'the Dutch community' and belong to this party. There are budgets, shopping lists, schedules, all you can think of that you'd need available and everybody who has done this event in past years is willing to help you to get started.

If you would like to be involved in organizing this event for next year, email Leann Mullender or Else Bakker ( or We're happy to tell you more about it and we'd love to hear from you!

One last shout out! The boxes with decorations and games, as well as the Pietenpakken are being stored for many years now in garages of the same people organizing this event. They do it because they care for this party, but they'd love to get back their space in their garages. Storage is very expensive, so if anyone has extra storage space available that could be used, we would love to hear from you!

Thank you!

Else Bakker
