TNCTALK - Anthony Fokker by Marc Dierikx

Dear Nederlandse Nederlandse,

On Tuesday, April 3rd, Dutch historian Marc Dierikx will do a TNC TALK about the famous Dutch aviation pioneer Anthony Fokker, following the presentation of Dierikx' book "Anthony Fokker: The Flying Dutchman Who Shaped American Aviation".

The life of Anthony Fokker reads like a movie script. The young man who left school in Holland without a diploma in 1909 returned home ten years later as a multimillionaire. In the meantime, he had become a pilot who could tell about the eight crashes he had survived. In the same time he had also progressed from tinkerer to industrialist. His name had achieved a worldwide ring.

When the German Revolution swept the country in 1918 and 1919, Fokker managed to escape, first to Holland, and then to the United States. He set up business in New York and New Jersey, and by the mid-1920s became the world's largest aircraft manufacturer. The U.S. Army and Navy acquired his machines, and his factories equipped legendary carriers such as Pan American and TWA at the dawn of commercial air transport.

We know Fokker as a Dutchman, much less as a German, as a would-be American, a cosmopolitan. How was that, actually? What drove this monomaniac workaholic? And what role did his utterly dramatic private life play in the course he followed? Marc Dierikx traces the extraordinary life of this Flying Dutchman and celebrates his spectacular achievements.

Marc Dierikx is senior researcher at the Huygens Institute of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) in Amsterdam. By origin a scholar of foreign policy, he has demonstrated a keen interest in the history of aviation, a topic on which he has written some fifteen books. His current Anthony Fokker: The Flying Dutchman Who Shaped American Aviation is his sixth book for the American market.
