World Economic Forum ASEAN 2018 to present new business opportunities in Vietnam

The World Economic Forum on ASEAN (WEF ASEAN) 2018, which is scheduled to take place in Hanoi from September 11th to 13th, will present attendees with new business opportunities in Vietnam. The Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) held a press conference on the event in the capital on August 30th.

Railway sector strives for better service

Train travel is falling behind other forms of transport, as passengers are choosing air and roads ahead of the tracks. This is due to poor service, problems with infrastructure and ticket prices that do not compete with transport rivals. During 2001 - 2010, investment in railway sector accounted for only 2.9% of total budget invested in the transport sector, while investment in road improvements made up for 88%.

HCMC seeks ways to curb CO2 emissions from vehicles

Air pollution in HCM City caused by vehicles has become even more serious than the level of pollution emitted by industrial zones, environmental experts say. The amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the city is estimated to be 38.5 million tones per year, making up about 16% of the country's total. With such alarming figures, the city is seeking ways to urgently reduce CO2 emissions, particularly from automobiles and motorbikes.

Nearly 87,500 firms enter market in eight months

Some 87,448 new enterprises were established in the first eight months of the year, registering a total capital of VND 878.6 trillion (USD 37.7 billion), a year-on-year increase of 2.4% in number of firms and 6.9% in capital, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO). During January - August, there were 20,942 businesses resuming their operations, growing 9.3% year on year.

New decree removes barriers for rice exporters

According to a new governmental decree, rice-exporting businesses will no longer be required to own rice storage, paddy milling and grinding facilities with processing capacities of 5,000 tones of rice and 10 tones of paddy per hour, respectively. According to Tran Van Cong, Deputy Director of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development's (MARD) Agro Processing and Market Development Authority, the new decree will help rice traders cut costs significantly.

The growing confidence of the business community in Vietnam has led to upbeat development of the economy in this year's first eight months, with industrial production hitting an eight-year high, serving as a major impetus for economic growth. Besides, Vietnam also saw nearly 87,500 enterprises newly established, registered at USD 38.87 billion, up 2.4% in the number of enterprises and 6.9% in capital, on-year.

Agri-business will bloom with EVFTA's tariff cuts

The EU - Vietnam Free Trade Agreement, with its extensive tariff cuts for agri-food products, is prompting foreign companies to enter the Southeast Asian market seeking investment and business opportunities in these products. After seven years of negotiations, Vietnam and the EU are currently completing final procedures to sign the bilateral free trade agreement (EVFTA) in October or November. The deal is expected to take effect in 2019.

HCMC seeks funds for metro lines

The authorities of HCM City have asked the Government to increase investment in the city's first two metro lines because of a capital shortage. Construction of Metro line No 1 that starts near Bến Thành Market in District 1 and ends at Suối Tiên Theme Park in District 9 was approved by the city in April 2007, with an investment of VND 17.4 trillion (USD 766.4 million).
