Karel Jacobus van Bohemen, born October 2, 1947, passed away on October 3, 2018, surrounded by his closest friends and his immediate family. He is survived by several siblings, all of whom reside in The Netherlands: his two sisters, Jopie and Marja, and two brothers, Henny and Koos. He is also survived by his wife of forty-seven years, Elizabeth, his son, Andrew and daughter-in-law Erin, and his granddaughter Olivia.
Karel was born and raised in Noordwijkerhout, The Netherlands, in a Catholic family with six children, of which he was the second eldest, and the oldest son. He grew up playing soccer, fishing, and working in flower fields. While in school he studied the blacksmith trade, yet his chosen profession was in tulips. In 1971, he and Elizabeth were married in Leiden.
His love for flowers eventually led him to an opportunity to move to The United States in the early 1970's. Here, he was one of the first to introduce Dutch flowers, such as daffodils and tulips, to the American retail market by selling bulbs for consumers to then up-and-coming companies like Home Depot and Pike Nurseries.
Karel and Elizabeth eventually settled in Marietta, Georgia in the early 1980's. Shortly thereafter their only son, Andrew, was born. At this time, Karel shifted his profession by taking ownership of a construction company, D&B Construction Enterprise, Inc., whose primary focus was bridges, slabs, culverts, and other concrete work. Under his twenty-five years of leadership, the company was a contractor for the State of Georgia and City of Atlanta, as well as multiple other municipalities. He retired in 2008, which allowed him more time to spend with his granddaughter Olivia, tend to his immaculate garden and yard, and follow his favorite sports teams; he was a die-hard Georgia Bulldogs football fan as well as a fan of Amsterdam Ajax and the Netherlands National Soccer Team.
For many years, he has been an active participant in the Atlanta Holland Club, a social community group of Dutch-Americans, and it is through this club that he built some of his closest friendships. In 2017, after residing in The United States for nearly four decades, he proudly became a United States citizen.
The Final Viewing will be on Friday, October 12th, 2018, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., and the Celebration of Life will begin at noon on Saturday, October 13th, 2018. Both will be held at Woodstock Funeral Home, located at 8855 Main St., Woodstock, Georgia, 30188
Please join us in celebrating the wonderful life of Karel van Bohemen.
