Voor Nederlanders in de Verenigde Staten: An Untouched House | November 7th, 2018

Dear Nederlandse  Nederlandse,

On Wednesday, November 7th, 2018 The Netherland Club of New York hosts Archipelago Books' official book presentation of Willem Frederik Hermans' famous Dutch novel An Untouched House (Het behouden huis, 1952), in a potent new translation by David Colmer.

In an open conversation on stage, David Colmer and writer Joseph O'Neill will discuss not only this new novel, but also Hermans' literature and Dutch literature in general, and the process of translating Dutch literature.

Following the book presentation and talk between Colmar and O'Neill, there is a book signing session and an informal reception with complimentary drinks in Davies.

Madness abounds in the waning months of World War II until a weary Dutch Partisan chances upon a luxurious, intact estate in an abandoned spa town. For a time, clean linens and running water replace unremitting bloodshed as the defining features of the nameless narrator's life; then the Germans retake the village. When they reach his new front door, the Partisan quickly accepts that he must resort to any means to keep the war out. With blunt yet transfixing prose, Hermans confronts his readers with the violent absurdity of war.

David Colmer is a writer and translator. He translates Dutch literature in a wide range of genres including literary fiction, nonfiction, children's books, and poetry.

Colmer is a four-time winner of the David Reid Poetry Translation Prize and received the 2009 Biennial NSW Premier and PEN Translation Prize. His translation of Gerbrand Bakker's The Twin (Archipelago) was awarded the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award and he received — along with Gerbrand Bakker — the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize for Bakker's novel The Detour.

Joseph O'Neill is the author of the novels The Dog, Netherland (which won the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction and the Kerry Group Irish Fiction Award), The Breezes, and This Is the Life. He has also written a family history, Blood-Dark Track. He lives in New York City and teaches at Bard College.

The book An Untouched House will be available for sale at the event for $15.
The first 5 people who RSVP will receive a free copy, signed by David Colmer.
